Sustainable Aquaculture

Steelhead production

High-quality steelhead, responsibly farmed

Our facility in Hanstholm is amongst the world’s largest recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS). With a production capacity of 1,000 tons of steelhead trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss) annually, we combine scale with sustainability.
The system circulates about 116.667 liters of water per minute, with an internal cleaning system, that ensures a daily water exchange of less than 5%. This means, that the system ensures a recirculation rate of 95%, which ensures both efficiency and environmental responsibility.

We are dedicated to consistently supplying high quality steelhead trout. The fish are raised from sterile, disease-free eggs, beginning their growth in fresh water until they reach 300-400 grams. From then on, they swim in saltwater race ways. This helps to produce stronger and healthier fish with more omega 3, more protein, and lower fat.

The fish are sorted and delivered either fresh or frozen, available in different sizes: 1-2 kilos, 2-3 kilos, and 3-4 kilos.

No Water Pollution

Over 90% of all nitrogen and phosphor is removed with our brand new sludge-plant. Collected waste materials are transported to biogas plants and turned into green energy.

No Parasites or Chemicals

Our steelhead trout thrive in optimal conditions — with no parasites, no antibiotics, no GMOs, and no growth hormones.

No Impact on Wild Species

Our closed system prevents interaction with wild fish and protects natural ecosystems.

High Efficiency

Lower feed consumption, no predators, and minimal mortality ensure resource-efficient production.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

Responsible growth for people, communities, and the environment

At Royal Danish Fish A/S, we take the responsibility to people, community as well as the environment very seriously. CSR is more than just compliance – it is a positive contribution to society through a sustainably run business. This includes respecting human rights, supporting social well-being, protecting the environment, and ensuring fair and safe working conditions.

In Denmark and abroad, we consistently meet – and aim to exceed – environmental requirements. We also strive towards creating an inclusive workplace, where people of different abilities can contribute and become valuable members of our team.

Through our breeding facilities in Ghana, West African Fish, we influence around 400 families by creating jobs and providing new opportunities. Beyond direct employment, many benefit indirectly through local trade and resale of Tilapia.

Our CSR efforts reflect our belief that responsible growth in aquaculture must create value – not only for our company but also the society and environment that surrounds it.
