Royal Danish Fish

A Proud Legacy in Danish Aquaculture

Decades of innovation shaping the future of fish farming

Royal Danish Fish has a long and proud history in aquaculture. The original facility was built in the 1980’s for turbot breeding. In the late 1990’s, a Japanese company recognized the potential in the site and launched the production of eels under the name DIAT, which introduced the Japanese specialty to the European market in 1998.

In 2000 our current CEO and part-owner, Mogens Mathiasen, acquired the company. A decade later, in 2011, the board decided on the official name change to Royal Danish Fish A/S, which was revealed during a visit from Queen Mary of Denmark.

A New Chapter in Sustainable Aquaculture

From eels to steelhead, pioneering sustainable fish farming

Over the years, we have gained extensive experience in aquaculture, with eels being the main product for many years. Today, we have transitioned from eels to steelhead trout production – a strategic shift driven by the restricted export of eels and the changing market conditions.
The transformation of our production has included a complete modernization of our facilities. Drawing on our 40 year experience working with Recirculation Aquaculture System(RAS), we are creating one of the world’s first steelhead breeding program in saltwater. This system ensures, that we are amongst the most sustainable in the world, as the waters used is cleansed and reused.

We are very excited to lead this new chapter in sustainable aquaculture.
